In September of 2010 I was traveling on the east coast and photographing the shows of one of my favorite artist… I was sitting at a table during soundcheck in Boston at the legendary Sculler’s Jazz Club as Bilal was playing keys and vibing with his band when a young slick cat walked up to me and we introduced ourselves, “What up man I’m Fred.” “Yo what up bro I’m Chris, Chris Turner.”  We got to rapping and found out we were both from Oakland and new many of the same people….we were “Oh you know him?” “Oh you know her?” and before you knew it Chris asked for my email address because he wanted to me to take a listen to something.  I didn’t know what I was in for, would it be some new Bilal that wasn’t released on the album? Would it be a compilation of this dude’s favorite hip hop artist? I had no idea what I was in for.   After sound check I went back to my room to get some rest before the show and to upload the photographs from soundcheck when my phone buzzed….email from Chris.  I took a listen and was hooked immediately.  I heard a voice unlike any I had heard before, belting out familiar tunes but there was something different….there were notes being reached that artist of today weren’t even attempting to pull off.  Needless to say, I was intrigued.  I downloaded the music from my commuter to my iPhone and listened to it non stop until I returned to Bay Area. It has since been my goal to share Chris Turner’s music to the world….for now, I’m settling with sharing his music with the Bay Area…Chris will be performing his first solo show in Oakland, CA on December 28th @ Vitus 2nd & Broadway, backed by the incredible band The Park.
